Lankeleisi KETT-8: this electric bike has an amazing way of adapting to its rider

Choosing an electric bike often means accepting a compromise. An urban model will do just fine for getting to the office or picking up some groceries, but it will quickly show its limits as soon as the pavement ends. The big fat bikes, on the other hand, can go just about anywhere and prove comfortable, but you have to deal with their weight and lack of agility in maneuvers.

Between the two, a few bikes are trying to find their place. The Lankeleisi KETT-8 electric bike is one of them. 26 x 3-inch tires, front and rear suspension, 960 Wh battery, 250 W motor: the technical specifications already hold up. But its most interesting idea lies elsewhere, in its ability to change behavior depending on how you want to pedal that day. And that’s something you don’t see every day.

Between city bike and fat bike, a third way

It’s difficult to categorize the KETT-8. It borrows a few codes from fat bikes, without going all the way to the huge 4-inch tires. Its open frame, rear rack, fenders, and complete equipment suggest a bike designed for daily commuting. And its full suspension opens up paths, as well as seriously damaged roads. The mix is surprising, but it holds together.

The aluminum frame is designed for cyclists measuring between 1.60 m and 1.90 m, with a maximum load of 180 kg. This latter value is high for an e-bike and leaves room once luggage is added.

On the downside: about 35 kg on the scale. This is clearly not the bike you’ll carry up to the fourth floor under your arm every evening. By removing the battery, which weighs nearly 5 kg, you just get back below 30 kg. Suffice it to say that this generous construction comes at a cost. But it justifies itself as soon as the road deteriorates.

3-inch tires that change a lot of things

Lankeleisi could have fitted 26 x 4-inch tires and delivered a pure and hard electric fat bike. The manufacturer opted for a middle ground, with Kenda 26 x 3-inch tires.

On paper, an inch difference seems trivial. On the road, it changes the character of the bike. The tire remains large enough to provide comfort, stability, and a good ability to absorb small imperfections, but it is less clumsy than a 26 x 4. The result is that the bike retains an enjoyable maneuverability in the city, in turns, or when it needs to weave through slowly.

The tires do not work alone. At the front, the suspended fork is adjustable. At the rear, there’s a real DNM air shock, which can be adjusted for pressure and rebound. The frame is therefore genuinely suspended, not just equipped with a seat post meant to filter three vibrations.

On a damaged road, cobblestones, or a country path, the difference is striking. According to user feedback, comfort seems to be the great success of this model.

Torque or cadence: why choose?

Let’s get to the KETT-8’s most interesting function.

An electric bike generally relies on a cadence sensor or a torque sensor to know when and how to trigger its assistance.

The first simply detects the crank rotation. You pedal, and the motor kicks in. The effort required can become very low, with the legs mainly serving to keep the crank moving. It’s comfortable, but sometimes a bit artificial. Some systems additionally suffer from a slight delay at startup, which can be particularly unpleasant when starting uphill in too high a gear.

The torque sensor, on the other hand, measures the pressure applied to the pedals and adjusts the assistance accordingly. You push gently, and the motor assists gently. You push harder, and it gives more. This brings you much closer to the feeling of a classic bike to which someone has discreetly added a pair of legs.

Usually, you have to choose your camp at the time of purchase. Not here: the KETT-8 allows you to switch from the torque sensor to the cadence sensor directly from its control, while riding, without getting lost in lengthy menus.

Imagine a ride of about fifty kilometers. At the start, the desire to pedal is there, so you stay in torque mode, and the assistance naturally follows your efforts. Two hours later, the wind has picked up, a nice hill appears, and your legs start protesting seriously. A switch to cadence mode, and the motor takes over.

It’s straightforward, but it’s probably what makes this KETT-8 truly versatile.

A 250 W motor that responds well

To stay within the category of electric bikes allowed on public roads, the KETT-8 is equipped with a 250 W nominal rear motor, with assistance cut off at 25 km/h (but it can be disengaged if needed).

The five levels of assistance do not just set a speed: they modify the power with which the motor supports the cyclist. You can ride with gentle assistance on flat terrain to save the battery, then increase a notch or two as you approach a hill. The Shimano 8-speed transmission is there to adjust the mechanical effort in parallel.

An acceleration trigger is also provided and can be installed on the bike. However, caution with regulations: this type of use, as well as derestriction that allows exceeding the regulatory characteristics of the e-bike, has no place on public roads. In everyday use, the standard operation limited to 25 km/h is more than sufficient.

A 960 Wh Samsung battery to see ahead

To power all this, Lankeleisi has integrated a 48 V, 20 Ah battery into the frame. A quick calculation gives 960 Wh, which is quite comfortable.

The cells are said to be sourced from Samsung, and the battery can be removed with a key. Convenient for recharging, but also to bring the battery inside when the bike spends the night in an unheated garage. The included charger delivers 3 A, with a full charge indicated in just under seven hours.

With 960 Wh under the frame, long rides become feasible without second thoughts. And this is probably where the KETT-8 excels the most.

Equipment designed for real riding

A versatile bike quickly loses its appeal if you have to buy half a dozen accessories before you can use it daily. On this front, the KETT-8 comes rather well equipped.

You’ll find a rear rack welded to the frame, metallic fenders, an LED front light, and a particularly comprehensive rear lighting system, with a rear light, stop light, indicators, and side lights. For a bike used every day, especially in the bad season when night falls at 5 PM, these features prove far more useful than a connected gadget that you’ll use twice.

The braking has been sized accordingly: hydraulic Zoom brakes with four pistons bite into 180 mm discs. With 35 kg of bike, plus the cyclist and sometimes luggage, this is not a luxury.

The cockpit includes a display that shows speed, assistance level, distance traveled, and battery status.

Lankeleisi also pays attention to the small details

The KETT-8 gives the impression that its manufacturer has spent time on more than just aligning flattering characteristics.

The cables are largely concealed, routing to the frame from the stem. The electrical connectors are protected, the grips are screwed in place to prevent them from turning, and the headlight is fixed to the stem in such a way that it follows the direction of the bike.

This represents a fairly typical approach for recent models from Lankeleisi: generously equipped bikes, often substantial, but with a finishing level that has improved significantly. The KETT-8 simply takes the recipe a step further.

Is the KETT-8 really the all-purpose electric bike?

Looking at its technical specifications, and especially the feedback from those who have covered several dozen kilometers with it, the KETT-8 checks many boxes. Fenders, lights, indicators, and a rear rack allow it to handle daily trips. Its 3-inch tires and dual suspension enable it to leave the pavement without turning every pothole into a rodeo session. Its 960 Wh battery opens the door to long outings. And the ability to switch from the torque sensor to the cadence sensor truly adapts the bike to your momentary desires or condition.

It is obviously not perfect. Its 35 kg are impossible to ignore. Its size is better suited to someone with a garage or suitable storage space than to a city dweller forced to carry the bike up stairs.

Its philosophy, however, is worth considering. Instead of manufacturing a highly specialized bike, Lankeleisi sought balance: comfortable enough for paths, maneuverable enough for the city, properly equipped for daily use, and sufficiently durable for much longer journeys on weekends. Most importantly, it lets its rider decide how they want to be assisted. One morning, you might want to pedal for real. In the evening, with 50 km in your legs and one last hill before home, you’re often quite glad to let the motor take its share of the workload.

Perhaps that’s what a truly versatile electric bike is: not the one that excels in a single discipline, but the one you hop on without even wondering what journey awaits you.
