Robot or domestic help: the real comparison for a clean home without spending your weekends on it

Saving time on cleaning is a dream for everyone. Between busy days, children, work, and leisure, spending weekends vacuuming and washing floors is not very exciting. Two solutions often come up: investing in a robot vacuum… or hiring a cleaning assistant.

On paper, both promise the same thing: a clean house without effort. In reality, the uses, costs, and results are quite different.

The robot vacuum: automated efficiency… but limited

As we have seen in our numerous robot vacuum tests, this equipment has made enormous progress in recent years. Smart navigation, mapping, automatic emptying, floor washing… some models are impressive.

In a well-organized house, it is a true ally. It can run every day, maintain a constant level of cleanliness, and prevent dust from accumulating. For those equipped with a smart home system like Home Assistant, it even becomes possible to automatically start the cleaning when everyone leaves the house. Convenient, discreet, almost magical.

But it shouldn’t be asked to do the impossible.

A robot primarily deals with floors. It won’t clean windows, dust the furniture, tidy the kitchen, or thoroughly take care of the bathrooms. Even for the floor, it can be challenged by certain carpets, stray objects, or hard-to-reach corners.

Another point to keep in mind: it requires a minimum of maintenance. Emptying the bin, cleaning the brushes, maintaining the docking station… it is not completely autonomous.

In summary, the robot vacuum is excellent for daily maintenance but doesn’t replace a proper cleaning.

Home cleaning: a complete and human solution

Hiring a cleaning assistant completely changes the game. Here, we are talking about a deep clean, tailored to your home and your needs.

A person can take care of the floors, of course, but also surfaces, bathrooms, kitchen, ironing, and sometimes even tidying up. This is a comprehensive approach, much more complete than an automated device.

Using a home cleaning service allows for delegating these tasks to trained professionals, with a secured framework and regular services.

There is also an aspect that we don’t always think about: the human side. For some people, especially seniors, the presence of a cleaning assistant brings a social connection, an exchange, a reassuring presence. And that, no robot can replace.

The budget question: a comparison more subtle than it seems

At first glance, the robot vacuum seems more economical. A good model costs between €300 and €1000, with few subsequent costs.

In contrast, a cleaning assistant represents a monthly cost. However, the reality is more nuanced.

In France, personal services allow you to benefit from a tax credit of 50%. In other words, a cleaning service often costs half of its listed price. Add to that employment service vouchers (CESU), and the solution becomes much more accessible than one might think.

Ultimately, the cost difference mainly depends on the frequency of interventions and your actual needs.

A robot is a one-time investment for daily maintenance. A cleaning assistant is a recurring solution, but much more comprehensive.

So why not both?

This is often the best approach, and one adopted by many households.

The robot vacuum takes care of the daily cleaning: dust, crumbs, regular maintenance. It operates autonomously and prevents the house from degrading between cleanings.

The cleaning assistant comes in once a week or every two weeks for a more thorough cleaning. Result: a house that is always clean, without effort, and without having to choose between technology and human intervention.

It’s a bit of a winning duo. The robot does the “dirty work” daily, and the human brings the finishing touches and quality.

So, which solution to choose?

It all depends on the lifestyle.

An active household, with little time and a controlled budget, will find in the robot vacuum an excellent starting point. It’s simple, effective, and already makes a big difference in daily life.

A family with children, animals, or a large house will often need to go further. In this case, home cleaning provides real comfort that is hard to replace.

And for those who really want to optimize their time (and peace of mind), combining both solutions remains clearly the best compromise.

Because, at the core, the real question is not just “who cleans better?”, but rather: how much is your free time worth? 😉
