RecalBox 10: Raspberry Pi 5, Steam Deck, new interface… the most ambitious version to date

RecalBox takes a leap forward. Version 10 has just been officially announced, and the team is not hiding its ambitions: new supported hardware, a complete redesign of the interface, a completely rethought game management system, and extended compatibility up to Raspberry Pi 5 and Steam Deck. Yes, nothing less.

For those who have followed the project from its beginnings – and we already spoke about it back in the Raspberry Pi 4 days and even the first versions turning a Pi into a console for about forty euros – the journey has been impressive. RecalBox 10 does not simply add a few systems: it redefines the retro gaming experience on modern hardware.

Expanded hardware support, from Raspberry Pi 5 to Steam Deck

After more than ten years of existence, RecalBox continues to evolve. V10 marks a real turning point for the distribution. And it starts with hardware compatibility.

The Raspberry Pi 5 is now officially supported, including the 2 GB version and via the Raspberry Pi 500. For those who appreciate well-crafted cases, compatibility has been announced with the Retroflag (64Pi Case, DreamCase) and the Argon One v3. In practice, this means that you can build a compact, high-performance retro console that is perfectly integrated into a modern living room… without any risky DIY.

But the big news, the eye-catching feature, is the full support for the Steam Deck (LCD and OLED), with advanced management of brightness, sound, and even sleep mode. In other words, your portable console can now become a native retro gaming machine, without complex tweaks. A true bridge between modern gaming and video game heritage.

An experimental support has also been announced for the Asus ROG Ally and the Lenovo Legion Go. The message is clear: RecalBox is no longer limited to the Raspberry Pi; it now aims at the entire ecosystem of gaming-oriented laptops.

CRT, arcade cabinets, and exotic peripherals: authentic retro remains at the heart

What makes RecalBox powerful is its respect for original hardware. V10 continues in this direction with major improvements for CRT screens and arcade cabinets.

The RGB Dual 2 still allows connecting a screen via SCART, RCA, VGA, or mini-jack for faithful display on a cathodic television. The RGB JAMMA 2, for its part, offers full support to revive a vintage arcade cabinet. For purists, the GunCon 2 light gun is supported at 15 kHz on CRT (experimental mode), and trackballs or spinners like Taito and Baolin are also supported.

There is a real desire not to sacrifice authenticity. This is not just an “HD emulation on a flat screen.” It is a platform designed for those who want to relive the sensations of an arcade hall or a living room from the 90s.

New emulated systems and increased performance

RecalBox 10 further expands its catalog of emulated systems while optimizing performance on existing platforms.

On PC and Steam Deck, the original Xbox makes its appearance. On Raspberry Pi 5 (with a minimum of 4 GB), we find systems like Model 3, Nintendo DS, GameCube, and even Wii. Yes, on a properly configured Raspberry Pi 5, these consoles become accessible under good conditions.

On the arcade side, major optimizations are announced for MAME and FBNeo, notably to take advantage of the Pi 5. For integrators or enthusiasts building custom cabinets, this opens interesting perspectives in terms of fluidity and compatibility.

A completely redesigned interface for ultra-smooth navigation

If the hardware news is spectacular, the graphical overhaul may well be what users notice most on a daily basis.

The frontend has been completely redesigned to offer smoother navigation, even with over 150 systems activated. New texture manager, reorganized menus, quick jumps between systems via L and R triggers, redesigned logos… The experience aims to be modern and instantaneous.

A new default theme is offered, customizable, with about ten themes available at launch. The integrated manager allows downloads and installations in two clicks, with automatic updates. For those who like to adapt the interface to their universe – minimalist, flashy, pure arcade – this is a real comfort.

System management is also more flexible: display or hide on the fly, finely customizable to keep only the consoles actually used. A small improvement on the surface, but that changes everything when the game library becomes sprawling.

One Game, One ROM: finally clean and readable game lists

ROM management has long been the Achilles’ heel of retro gaming. Regional duplicates, clones, multiple versions… one quickly ends up with endless lists.

RecalBox 10 introduces the “One Game, One ROM (1G1R)” feature, which automatically groups different versions of the same game according to your priority regions. Result: cleaned-up lists, without losing access to other versions if needed.

The arcade view also benefits from a clone/parent grouping and a cleanup of non-functional BIOS and games. ROMs can be deleted directly from the interface, modifications are automatically detected and updated in the game list, without rebooting.

Sorting becomes much more powerful: by playtime, region, number of players, genre, developer, rating… with clear headers according to sorting type. A search by version or by license (handy for displaying all available Street Fighters) is also integrated.

Concretely, this transforms the user experience. We spend less time scrolling, more time playing. And that’s far from trivial.

Multiplayer improvements and advanced settings management

RecalBox 10 also brings more discreet, yet useful enhancements for daily use.

The multitap is automatically activated on Super Nintendo, PlayStation, and Saturn as soon as three controllers are detected. Vibrations are now supported on compatible systems. Perfect for a retro night with four players on Micro Machines or Bomberman!

On the maintenance side, resetting settings is split into two options: resetting emulator settings or restoring factory settings without deleting games, saves, and favorites. A nice safety net when a configuration goes haywire.

A store and ready-to-use kits around Raspberry Pi 5

RecalBox accompanies this V10 with an update of its official store. Customizable RecalTower kits are offered, integrating HDMI, CRT, Card Reader… with Raspberry Pi 5 and RecalBox 10 pre-installed.

The add-ons are designed to be completely plug-and-play. You plug them in, it’s recognized, you play. The idea is simple: to minimize technical friction to make retro gaming accessible to the greatest number of people, while maintaining a quality approach.

RecalBox 10, a milestone for open-source retro gaming

The team sums it up well: with more supported machines, more features, and a modernized interface, RecalBox 10 is not just an update, but a new stage in the project’s evolution.

Available now for free download, this version confirms that retro gaming is no longer a makeshift niche in a corner of the garage. It is a mature, structured ecosystem capable of running seamlessly on both a Raspberry Pi 5 and a cutting-edge Steam Deck.

For enthusiasts, geeks who love optimizing their setup, but also for families who want to share a moment on a home cabinet in the living room, RecalBox 10 offers a solid, high-performance, and durable base.

And honestly… seeing a Raspberry Pi 5 run systems once reserved for beefy PCs is always impressive! With terrible weather outside, it’s the perfect time to go install this new version :D
